Stakeholders at a local governance conference in Sunyani have appealed to the government to consider establishing integrated waste recycling plants in all the 16 regions to help create jobs.
They explained that will be the best way for the government to fulfill its industrialization drive of establishing factories in every district, considering the limited time it has to make good the campaign promise of ‘one district, one factory’.
The call was made by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and Presiding Members at the conference organised by the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG).
Presiding member for Sunyani West Assembly Bernard Takyi was of the view that establishing recycling plants in all the regions will not only provide jobs, but also ensure cleaner communities and generate the needed revenue for the assemblies
Making a presentation, Deputy Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mrs Gloria Opoku Anti explained that an integrated approach to waste management with focus on recycling has improved economies of the world.
That, she explained, underscores the need for authorities to adopt the approach for sustainable waste management.
She cited Dubai, Rwanda and Mauritius which have adopted the approach and are noted now clean cities, indicating President Akufo-Addo’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa is achievable if Ghana adopts the waste recycling approach in all the regions.
The approach, Mrs Anti said, has proven to be the sustainable means of waste management.
She said the newly commissioned Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant established by waste management giant, Zoomlion at the Waste Recovery Park in Accra, is an innovative facility that recovers waste into re-useable products.
