At least 27 people have lost their lives in the Upper East Region after a downpour on Tuesday.
About 19 residents who got injured are receiving treatment at various health facilities.
Over 600 residents have also been displaced and are now putting up in mosques, churches and schools.
The affected districts include Kasina Nankana East and South, Builsa South, Bawku, and Garu Timpane.
The Upper East Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Jerry Asamani, who confirmed the situation in the region to Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Wednesday, said “the emergency services have asked residents to move to higher grounds in order to avoid being swept by the floods”.
He said, “As at yesterday [Tuesday], it was 20 but today, it has risen to 27 and we are trying to identify the seven”.
He told the host, Bright Kwasi Asempa that 286 houses collapsed completely and 1,278 have their houses partly collapsed.
“19 injured. Some have been discharge from our traditional homes. Seven are currently in the hospital”.
According to Mr. Asamani the affected persons were in their rooms sleeping when the buildings caved in on them whilst others were swept away when they attempted to walk through the flood.
The NADMO Director noted that “these houses are mud houses and the base cannot stand the flooding”.
He is appealing for relief items for the inhabitants.
