Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to score the only goal as Chelsea beat Ajax Amsterdam 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League.
It was a win to savour for Frank Lampard’s side as the goal came in at the death.
Ajax had won their opening games against Valencia and Lille going into Wednesday’s game at the Johan Cruyff Arena and so were seen as the favourites to win the game.
The English side, on the other hand, had lost one – to Valencia at the Stamford Bridge on Matchday 1 – and won their last outing at Lille.
After a goalless first half in the Dutch capital, the game was billed to end in a draw.
Manager Lampard brought on Batshuayi for Tammy Abraham with 20 minutes to go.
The substitution seemed to have worked to perfection as the Belgian combined with another substitute Christian Pulisic -who came on for Willian – to clinch the winner.
The win takes Chelsea temporarily on top of Group H with six points same as the Dutch side, which had not lost a game since May, 2019.
