Ghana football legend Abedi Ayew Pele broke down while in an interview with the nation’s broadcaster lunch time on Sunday.
The legendary former Ghana captain captured the eyes of many football fans while talking about his time as a footballer for the Black Stars, his club career and many other topics.
Abedi began his career at Great Farkus Football Club. In his formative years, he was one of the best and it was a trait he carried along all the way till he retired.
He was drawn to tears when his former coach and the man who discovered him, Herbert Adika, surprised him in the studio to share some of his great memories with Abedi and with the many watching on TV then.
“He was a great player. There was no match that he did not excel. He was too good that after every match, he had donations from the spectators,” Adika recounted.
Adika spoke of Abedi’s early life as a young footballer and the long treks he had to make from Dome to Avenor in Accra just to play football.
“He never missed training. At that time if you look at Dome and Avenor, it was quite a distance so after training when he hears the noise of the train because the train used to pass through Dome, he will run to Alajo to go and take the train. When he was late then he had to sleep in Newtown.”
The now blind Adika’s recollection of Abedi’s incredible prowess was an emotional moment.
Abedi’s teary face on TV will become one of the most iconic television images in this country.
