The Ghana Premier League is set for a prolonged spell on the touchlines after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo extended the ban on sporting activities to July 31st in his Sunday night address.
Officials of the Ghana Football Association were confident clubs would be allowed back in training soon but despite easing restrictions on religious gatherings, education for final year students and insisting that “we could not live with these restrictions forever”, sporting activities will not be allowed to resume.
While non-contact sports such as golf and tennis is allowed to resume, the President said other sporting events remains prohibited alongside night clubs, cinemas, drinking spots and others.
It will be a crushing blow to the Ghana Football Association, whose president Kurt Okraku had said recently that “If we are to cancel the league, it will be another trying period for players, clubs, referees and everybody involved in football.”
There are those convinced the GFA should do exactly that and cancel the league and give itself time to get ready for the next league season. Others such as Anthony Yeboah thinks Ghana football is simply not suited to the measures required to get the campaign back on track.
