The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reached an agreement with government to provide a monthly stipend to 500 female footballers for the next six months, starting this month.
The agreement was announced by the President of the FA, Kurt Okraku, during the GFA’s Executive Council meeting on Tuesday.
The coronavirus disease has brought football to its knees in Ghana and with a large number of the players depending on salaries that clubs now find difficult to pay, government’s Youth Employment Agency (YEA) initiative has been extended to sports to help relieve the clubs.
YEA’s Youth in Sports programme is dedicated to provide employment for over 5,000 youth and this agreement with the GFA will cover all 480 players in the women’s League and 20 other individuals.
Women’s football has been cancelled since March along with all other football competitions in the country since the outbreak of coronavirus in Ghana.
