The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has said there are minors, foreigners and other ineligible voters on the new voters register.
According to the chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensah, such persons who have found their names on the register during the just-ended exercise would have their names expunged.
“We are aware that there are some of these people minors, foreigners and people not of sound mind etc who are on the roll. We are not oblivious of this fact,” she told the EC’s ‘Let the Citizen Know Series’ in Accra on Wednesday August 12.
Mrs Mensah however said, “we are unable to give the breakdown of those ineligible persons as of now, because the challenge processes are still ongoing.”
The commission there is an ongoing vetting exercise to identify such persons and subsequently remove them from the electoral roll.
On concerns that some persons were still unable to register during the mop up exercise, Jean Mensah said, ” the commission has yet to receive any report from its regional officers about any person or group of persons who were unable to register during the two-day mop up window.”
She however said the EC was looking into the matter and would take a decision based on what they find.
The EC registered 30, 814 persons during the two-day mop up exercise bringing the total to 16, 963, 306 persons during the exercise.
Out of the number, 54.8% were female and 48.27% were male.
