GPL Week 3 Review: Aduana, Bechem draw as Inter Allies break Hearts
The weekend kicked off with a game between Legon Cities and Medeama SC.
Nothing could separate the two sides after 90 minutes and they had to settle for a point each. The headlines, however, belonged to Asamoah Gyan.
The 35-year-old made his first appearance for the Royals and showed glimpses of what he would offer going forward.
Newly-appointed Legon Cities coach Bashir Hayford did not take charge of this game but reports indicate that he will officially begin his duties soon.
Liberty Professionals welcomed Techiman Eleven Wonders to the Dansoman Carl Reindorf Park as they looked to win their first game of the season.
It was the visitors, however, who opened the scoring in the 43rd minute through George Osei.
Their lead did not last long as Abdul Razak Boame equalised for Liberty just a minute later and that is how the game ended. Both teams preserve their unbeaten records and look to improve in their next game.
Ebusua Dwarfs were hoping to bounce back after losing their previous game against Eleven Wonders as they played host to Berekum Chelsea. Martin Tsiboah put Dwarfs in front early in the first half and the home side stayed solid and successfully closed out the game and secured their first win of the season.
WAFA were back at their fortress in Sogakope and were looking for their second win of the season against Elmina Sharks. Many observers expected a tough game and it didn’t disappoint.
Justice Mensah put Sharks ahead in the 41st minute and WAFA had to dig deep to find the equaliser in the 60th minute through August Boakye.
WAFA were unable to find the winner and neither could the visitors and this game also ended in a draw.
Bechem United travelled to Dormaa to face an underwhelming Aduana Stars side. The two teams were hungry for all three points but had to settle for just one as neither of them could find a breakthrough goal.
It ended in a goalless draw in Dormaa in Aduana Stars’ first game at home this season.
Karela United climbed to the top of the table with an impressive victory against Dreams FC at the Cosby Awuah Memorial Park.
Dreams FC took the lead through Joseph Esso but Karela’s Franklin Osei was clinical, grabbing a brace for himself and turning the game around in favour of his side.
Karela United have had a brilliant start to the season and their charge continued with a good victory.
Accra Hearts of Oak were disappointing as a 61st minute goal by Richmond Lamptey meant that they suffered their first defeat this season at the hands of Inter Allies.
The Phobians put out a decent performance but Inter Allies matched them all the way and were able to take home all three points.
Kotoko’s GPL game against Accra Great Olympics was postponed as they drew 1-1 away at FC Nouadhibou in a CAF Champions League qualifier. Osman Ibrahim’s strike was cancelled out by a penalty converted by the Mauritanians.
Ashanti Gold also drew goalless at home with FC Salitas of Burkina Faso in their CAF Confederation Cup qualifier.
