Covid-19: Vaccines not 100% solution -Virologist
A Virologist Dr. Sebastian Eugene Arthur has said that vaccines are not medicines that will cure the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Arthur, speaking in an interview with Berla Mundi on the New Day show on TV3 on December 31, stated that the much awaited vaccines for the COVID-19 pandemic should not be confused with drugs that will cure the virus but rather just a vaccine which is not hundred percent cure-proof for the virus.
When asked about the advent of the much anticipated vaccines to counter the virus, the virologist answered thus “yes there are vaccines now but vaccines are not medicines, they are not 100% efficient, let’s be clear about”.
“There are some people who will be vaccinated but still won’t be protected from the virus, so a drug is still needed to treat people. Vaccine is not complete protection from the virus, so we still need drugs to cure the virus” he said.
Dr. Arthur further declared that he is working on the research for the drug for the pandemic.
When Berla asked him when he thinks the vaccines will be coming to Ghana, he stated that that information is the government’s prerogative to give.
As predicted by the World Health Organisation(WHO) and scientists that the vaccines for the dreaded pandemic will be ready and available in December, early in the month of December two vaccines were approved and outdoored for countries like the US and the UK.
These two approved vaccines are the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines authorized by the FDA with data showing that the vaccine starts working soon after the first dose and has an efficacy rate of 95% seven days after the second dose. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is for people aged 16 years and older, it requires injections given 21 days apart.
The Moderna vaccine was also approved for vaccination by the FDA and data showing that the vaccine has 94.1% efficacy rate. This vaccine is for people aged 18 and older and requires two injections given 28 days apart. Both the Pfizer/BioNTech and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines uses messenger RNA(mRNA). These vaccines have been dispensed in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States since December 17 this year.
