Hearts of Oak’s traditional clash with Asante Kotoko is one that always makes headlines.
The two are by far the oldest and most successful clubs in the country. Between them they have 42 titles which is the most for any side in the country.
Kotoko have had the lion share of success in the league but Hearts have been their biggest nemesis yet in the Ghana Premier League.
On Sunday they rekindle a rivalry that is deeply rooted in time. The antagonism between the two teams can be felt – in performance, in club organization and structure and many more.
It should be a spectacle. Hearts are coming into this game of the back of two wins since the sacking of Kosta Papic.
Papic oversaw a period of mess in his time and right before his deparature, there had been 4 losses on the bounce for the Phobians.
But Papic’s exit and a slight resurgence – after their last two games against Dwarfs and Liberty – gives them a big reason to be hopeful in the super clash. At Kotoko though, things look a bit different.
Bar the performance in Africa, Kotoko look fine. Their striker, Kwame Poku has been on some good form for them – scoring 7 goals in the league, Fabio Gama the Brazilian has made them tick and players like Latif Anabilla and Emmanuel Sarkodie have been the engine room from which they operate.
Ahead of this fixture, Coach Abdul Gazale and Johnson Smith will hope that their charges can maintain the decent form in the league as they face Hearts and in Accra where they perform so well, it will be an added incentive. Hearts are sixth while Kotoko are 7 on the same points with 3 games in hand. It will be interesting how Sunday’s game will turn out.
