Western Region’s most listened-to radio station Connect 97.1FM, a subsidiary of the Media General Group based in Takoradi, decided to start the Ghana month with a rather grandiose display of traditional wear by its management and staff.
From the Station Manager, heads of department down to the janitor, everyone wore a traditional dress to give a fine expression to the Heritage Month.
The month of March has been christened ‘The Heritage Month’ to encourage Ghanaians wear and display outfits that depict the cultural and true essence of the country.
It was a beautiful sight to behold at the premises of Connect FM at Pipe Ano in Takoradi as members of staff wore different traditional dresses from Kaba and Slit, rare and rich Kente clothes and other attire.
Regional Manager Ransford Asare explained that “as the most listened-to radio station, we could only start the Ghana Month with pageantry to consolidate our position while leading the way for others to follow”.
“Like we have been doing for the past three years with setting the pace, we wanted to start the Ghana Month right. You will look around and you will realise that it is only Connect FM that gave meaning to the Month. For some people, it was even when we were in front of our premises to take pictures that they become aware that it’s the Ghana Month. We promise our cherished listeners that we will continue to air programmes that go to the core of their everyday needs.”
He added: “As part of our desire to promote Made in Ghana products, for this month there is going to be juicy packages for businesses that deal in Made in Ghana products. We will discount the advert price for them. In fact, there will be special packages just for them. It doesn’t matter whether you are in Takoradi or not. We want to encourage people to wear and patronise Made in Ghana products. So, when businesses are able advertise more without any let, the needed buzz will be created”.
Western and Central Regional Bureau News Editor for Media General Shirley Ewurama Smith explained that for the month of March, the various bulletins will go heavy on the history and sacrifices of Ghana’s illustrious forebears.
“In this month, Connect News intends to celebrate the Western Region. We are going to tell the Western Region story, our landmark, heritage, the food we eat and things that make the region unique. We will also look at the role the region played in the struggle for Independence. Today, for example, we are looking at how Sekondi-Takoradi came into being.”
Programmes Manager Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson said the station will be engaging a host of senior citizens to tell the Western Region story.
“[This is] to give the senior citizens the opportunity to reminisce and share with us the stories of old. And also to give the opportunity to this young generation to have a feel and learn invaluable lessons thereby imbibing in them a sense of patriotism”.
