Mamelodi Sundowns President Patrice Motsepe will go unopposed in the upcoming CAF Elections following the withdrawal of the other three candidates.
The contest which initially was between four candidates has now been reduced to only one person following a meeting held between in Rabat, Morocco last weekend.
The four candidates will gather again in Mauritania ahead of Saturday’s AFCON U-20 finals.
All four candidates have agreed that Patrice Motsepe should take the top job with Augustin Senghor, Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania) and Jacques Anouma (Ivory Coast) assuming two vice-presidential roles and a special advisor role respectively.
Senegalese Football Association President Augustin Senghor said in a statement that they took the decision in the interest of African football.
“We have decided to accept the proposal submitted to us by Fifa, Morocco and Egypt in the superior interest of the unity of African football,” he stated.
He added “the withdrawal of my candidacy for the presidency of Caf for the benefit of another candidate will not be shared by all for various reasons, but I think it’s the right decision.
“Achieving the objective of a strong, united, more efficient and more attractive Caf is worth all the sacrifices, even that of renouncing legitimate personal ambitions.”
The CAF Presidential Elections will take place on March 12 in Rabat, Morocco.
