Some key Ghanaian players had a season to forget at their clubs in the 2020-2021 European league season.
With some winning trophies, others were battling relegation and some strikers struggled with goal drought.
In London where most Ghanaians had their lenses focused there because of Thomas Partey’s groundbreaking move to Arsenal from Athletico Madrid, things didn’t go well as planned, Arsenal missed out on European qualification for the first time in 20 years.
Partey however won a trophy, thanks to the spirited performance of his former club Athletico Madrid where he played three games and qualified to be called a league winner.
Still in London and in the Premier League, Jordan Ayew had a tough season with inferior statistics.
The striker in 35 games scored only a goal and set up two.
These numbers are obviously not good for a striker who was the club’s topscorer during the previous season.
Jeffrey Schlupp usurped Michael Essien as the Ghanaian with most appearances in the history of the Ghana Premier League.
The defender played 28 games in all competitions and got himself directly involved in 5 goals.
In all of these, there was a great news for Ghanaians as Daniel Amartey made a return from injury to play 17 games for Leicester City and went ahead to win the English FA and book an Europa League spot.
Lastly in the English Premier League, youngster Mohammed Salisu after going off due to work permit got the chance to play for Southampton and went ahead to make 15 appearances.
A pillar at the back of Celta Vigo defence, Joseph Aidoo helped ‘the Celta Club’ to a 8th position in the Spanish La Liga.
In Netherlands, Kudus Mohammed had a debut season full of positives despite picking up an injury which ruled him out of the UEFA Champions League.
The youngster won a double – the league and the domestic cup.
Bernard Mensah made a decision to stay away from the national team to focus on his club football due to personal reasons.
His decision seemed to have paid off as he won a double with Besiktas in the 2020-2021 season.
Baba Rahman managed to recover from injury, sign for PAOK Thesalonika, get a national team call up and lay his hands on a trophy, all in the just ended season.
Alfred Duncan played 20 games for Sassuolo and helped them remain in the Italian topfligiht.
John Boye captained FC Metz and helped them finish 10th in the French Ligue 1 with 35 games.
Abdul Majeed Waris managed to make 15 appearances in the French Ligue 1 with a goal to his credit.
Alexander Djiku was also influential for Strasbourg.
