St. Anthony of Padua Junior High School is the Junior High School with the “best brains” in the Sekondi-Takoradi and the Efia-Kwesimintsim assemblies of the Western Region.
The school on Wednesday, June 9 won the maiden edition of Takoradi-based Connect FM‘s quiz competition “Connect Western Best Brains”.
The contestants – Francis Arthur Yankholmes, Maclegdof Toku and George Dadzie for St. Anthony of Padua – shrugged off competition from colleague contestants from Woodbridge International School and Bethal Methodist School after a nerve-wracking five rounds of competition.
The first round was a battle between Bethal Methodist and St. Anthony of Padua with each scoring 30 points. Woodbridge International managed 27 points.
St. Anthony of Padua took the lead in the second round with 55 points while Bethal Methodist had 52 points. Woodbridge International School again trailed with 50 points.
In the third round ,Bethal Methodist proved they were a force to reckon with as they shared same points with St. Anthony of Padua as each had 82 points.
But their bravado was short-lived as St. Anthony of Padua took the lead in the fourth and fifth round with 108 and 117 points respectively.
By dint of hard work, Woodbridge International tied with Bethal Methodist in the final round.
Unfortunately, Bethal Methodist snatched the last “power question” to place second.
Headmistress of St. Anthony of Padua School Ernestina Awo Boakye, who could not hide her joy, insisted that the final result is a manifestation that indeed they are the school with the “Best Brains”.
“We have an enviable wealth of experience when it comes to quiz competitions. We have won in several of them both in the region and at the national level. So, there was no way we were going to lose this one,” she said.
“We prepared the kids well and when it was time for them to deliver, they did so brilliantly and gallantly. We are happy but not complacent. We will still go ahead to give the students the best of everything so that we will continue to be the school with the best brains.”
For their prize, each of the three contestants for St. Anthony of Padua received a tablet and a medal.
The school also had a cash prize of GH¢1,000, a citation, certificate, science pack, souvenirs from sponsors and trophy.
Bethal Methodist and Woodbridge International also had a citation, science pack, certificate and souvenirs from sponsors.
A contestant from Bethal Methodist School, Analisa Sam Ocran, said they were undone by the Mathematics questions but promised to work on it so they improve on their fortunes in subsequent editions.
“We tried our best. Our teachers also did the best for us. But I guess in the end, our best was not enough. We are only motivated to do more with the results we had though we had come into the competition to win. We will go back and prepare harder for the next edition.”
Station Manager for Connect FM Ransford Osei Asare promised that the quiz competition will be sustained.
“At Connect FM, we try our best to always be innovative and to live by the three pillars of broadcasting which are to entertain, inform and educate. When we conceived the quiz idea, we knew it was going to be tough but we were also determined to pull it off. And we have been able to make the dream a reality. Our sponsors were also a strong backbone. They have seen what we can do and I believe they will not hesitate to come onboard in the subsequent editions because this is going to be an annual ritual.”
He added: “Already the feedback from the schools have been very encouraging. That, we should expand the competing schools. We will do just that. We want to thank anyone who helped us organise the maiden edition.”
The maiden edition of Connect Western Best Brain was powered by Connect 97.1 FM and sponsored by: Cowbell, Piccadilly, Flora disposable handkerchiefs, Youth Bridge Foundation and Anchor Aviation in partnership with Ghana Education Service – Western Regional Directorate, GODA GH, Ghana Technical Secondary School, Rosado Catering Services.
