Primary schools in Ghana will soon be introduced to the game of chess to augment in the holistic development of pupils.
This, according to the Managing Director of Reiss & Co Ghana LTD, Jeffrey Sowa will contribute specifically to the development of the mental skills of young people. Thus, he hopes to introduce a National Chess Championship in primary schools across the country.
Mr. Sowa explained, that, in line with the recently introduced new curriculum for basic schools, which among other things, seeks to encourage logical and critical thinking, his company decided to augment these efforts through Chess.
This sport, he said, is known globally to help people, especially kids, improve upon their problem- solving skills, social skills, level of concentration, and planning capabilities.
This comes after the current African U-9 chess champion, Dave Acheampong, paid a courtesy call on the multi-divisional company a week ago. While commending Dave for his incredible performance, Mr. Sowa pledged his company’s support towards honing the skills of many younger people in primary schools through the Chess competition.

He said, ‘I think the best thing to do to these younger ones is to introduce them to chess if we want to help broaden their minds. They need to focus at this very tender age and it is very important to introduce them to the sport. Having sponsored various chess competitions, and seen how it has positively impacted both the young and old,we as a company, have decided to spearhead its introduction into schools, especially in deprived areas, to offer the young ones a chance develop their skills.’
For his part, Acheampong, who won the 2020 African Schools Individual Chess Championship, called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to add chess to its curriculum at the basic level of education.
The eight-year-old noted that being introduced to chess at a very tender age has sharpened his brain and helped him think differently among his peers. He hopes to compete in more continental and global competitions to improve his capabilities for the future and called on companies to support him to become a grandmaster. He also admonished parents to allow their kids experiment more with the sport.
