Kumerica’s presence was felt at this year’s VGMA when they stormed the stage to perform one of their greatest hits. And according to Berlyn, this is a big sign that asakaa, also known as drill music, is here to stay.
Berlyn, who just dropped a new single, ‘Boyz Ha Me’, has been in the music industry for 5 years. And strongly believes that asakaa has been endorsed by the good people of Ghana. He said, “We all can testify from the numbers we have been making the numbers with this drill.”
He also discredited the perception that asakaa music became prominent only because the country was under lockdown during the height of the pandemic. Berlyn pointed out that other groups making music, but none made the kind of noise Kumericans did.
Narrating his childhood experiences to Cookie Tee on the NewDay show, Berlyn mentioned that he hoped to be an author growing up. But due to some reasons, including financial constraints, he was unable to further his education and pursue his dream. Now he uses music as a tool to express his creativity and to tell stories.
His song ‘Boyz Ha Me’ tells of how young people already burdened with responsibilities have to carry their less fortunate friends. He said this drains them even before they are financially stable. Berlyn also spoke about growing up in a community that has produced great musical legends. He described life in Kumerica (Kumasi) as a tough jungle that produces only the best. “Being in Kumerica is a whole lot of ups and downs. In Kumerica, you have to be a man even though you are a boy.”
The Kumerica movement started in Kumasi as a tool to create awareness and champion assets in the region.
