The US Department of State has named development planner Jalil Ali Mahama as one of some 32 Ghanaians to partake in the 2022 Mandela Washington Fellow in the United States.
The US Embassy Ghana shared a post on the announcement on its Facebook wall on Friday, May 20, stating: “The select group are leaders in their professions and communities and were recruited from a candidate pool of nearly 4,000 Ghanaian applicants through a rigorous, competitive process.”
In an interview with 3news.com, Mr Mahama said he has “over the last 10 years sacrificed my personal life towards the development of rural and peri-urban communities through planning and volunteerism”.
He said he was honoured to be recognized by the U.S. Embassy Ghana, and the U.S. Department of State “for my modest contribution to my profession and community through JAM Initiative GH.”
Jalil Ali Mahama is an experienced development planner and policy analyst with over nine (9) years of experience providing leadership in the strategic planning and implementation of public policies and programmes within the local government administration.
Currently, he is the Municipal Planning Officer for the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly and the Team Lead for JAM Initiative GH, a non-profit he founded, aimed at mobilizing local resources for community development.
The 2022 Mandela Washington Fellow, according to the US Embassy Ghana, will have a total of 700 African leaders between the ages of 25-35 participate in the program this year.
“They will have the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for further professional development after they return to their home countries,” the US Embassy Ghana said.
