The Ejura Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has said its decision to secure a court injunction to restrain the one year anniversary prayers for victims of the Ejura shooting incident is to prevent another disturbance.
Chairman of the Council who also doubles at the Municipal Chief Executive for Ejura-Sekyedumase, Dr Kingsley Osei indicated the intended anniversary celebration which has a component of cleaning exercise is likely to turn chaotic.
“Two young men came to my office that they wanted to organise an anniversary for deceased of last year’s disturbances with a cleaning exercise component. After a MUSEC meeting, we advised against that because the implications could be dire.
“We asked that they join the Ejura Traditional Council since it had plans to organise similar anniversary and pray for the departed soul but they declined.
“We do not want to take any chances and allow what happened last year to recur, hence, our decision to not to support the anniversary. If they want to go ahead, we are afraid they could be met by Security forces and we do not want that to happen.”
The Ejura District Command of the Ghana Police Service secured an ex parte injunction against conveners of the commemoration of the deadly Ejura disturbances.
Led by #FixTheCountry Movement, the families of victims had scheduled a number of events to mark one year since the deadly incident.
They were going to clean the cemetery, where the dead were buried, and build a tombstone over their graves.
Dua’a prayers and Islamic Quran recitals were scheduled to be held as well.
But on Tuesday, June 28, the police proceeded to the Ejura District Court to apply for injunction on the events.
This was granted by Magistrate Dennis Eyram Fumey.
It is for a 10-day period.
The disturbances on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 were sparked by the death of social media activist Ibrahim Mohammed, known on Facebook as Macho Kaaka.
