Local travellers will from April next year enjoy the brand-new Premium Economy Class on-board Lufthansa from Accra via Frankfurt to over 193 international destinations in 81 countries across the Americas, Asia, and Europe.
Mr. Kevin Markette, Country Manager of Lufthansa, told the B&FT that: “The new Premium Economy on Lufthansa is different from what you know as economy plus on other airlines. It is a classic premium economy; it’s a new bigger seat, wider seat, with far improved seat pitchâ€Â.
The configuration of the new Premium Economy is expected to be 2-3-2 as opposed to 2-4-2 in economy class. It will come with a lot of additional benefits for the benefit of passengers.
“The service will have its own service culture -- it will have up-graded catering with real glass, not plastic, amenity kits, water bottles and individual plug-points for electronic gadgets. There’s also going to be an increase in the entertainment system. Basically it’s an overall improved cabin positioned somewhere between business and economy class,†he said.
“We have at this stage over 100 wide-body aircraft that we are reconfiguring step by step, and we expect the first flight with the new premium economy to start from the end of November 2014. I expect that we will see the first premium economy in Accra in the second quarter of 2015. “
The retrofitting of Lufthansa’s fleet to include the new Premium Economy comes on the heels of introducing the Airbus A330-300 aircraft on the Accra Accra- Frankfurt route in March, 2014. The new refurbished aircraft has eight seats in first class; 48 seats in business class and 165 seats in Economy cabin.
The A330 aircraft offers passengers in first class cabin lie-flat beds, aisle partition that ensures privacy, excellent ambience, and delicious cuisine. It offers a convenient storage area for each passenger. The entertainment system on board offers different genres of music and movies to suit every taste. Passengers are also welcomed to their seats with a lovely red rose.
Business class cabins offer passengers full-flat seats and a nicely-designed seating arrangement that offers enough arm-rest area for all passengers. Passengers are also able to enjoy adjustable large monitors to suit their sleeping or seating posture. Economy passengers on the Lufthansa Airbus A330 get to enjoy more leg room.
Passengers are also treated to delicious cuisine that Lufthansa has been known for over the years.
The menu on offer from Accra includes Ghanaian dishes such as Kelewele, Jollof rice, red-red, and grilled chicken. At least one of these is available in all cabins.
The airline currently offers one of the best all-inclusive fares to various destinations in Europe and North America. The German carrier currently operates flights on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
However, the airline is to make a change in its winter schedule starting on October 28, 2014, to better serve Ghanaian travellers.
Mr. Markette said: “In terms of the Accra route, we will be making a slight change in the winter schedule. We will move our Wednesday flights to Tuesday, which will again improve the offer to the customers in the sense that we do not have two days in a row that we do not fly.
“Currently we don’t fly on Mondays and Tuesdays, but in the future we will not fly on Mondays and Wednesdays -- thereby improving the business traveller’s connectivity starting from this winter. The first Tuesday flight is schedule for 28 October, 2014.
“From the Ghanaian perspective, we will do our best to offer as many Ghanaian touches as we can. One of them is the catering on-board. We have received positive feedback from travellers. We also work on prices to ensure that they are competitive and attractive. Ultimately, it’s one of our goals to increase our flights to Accra to a daily flight,†he said.
