Lecturers at the Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are encouraging students to use innovative ways to impact society and also reduced graduate unemployment in Ghana.
University authorities are optimistic that grooming students to take up responsibilities will make them well-prepared to overcome the challenges of life.
Speakers at the 3rd edition of the Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy Conference organized by the KNUST’s Institute of Distance Learning(IDL) emphasized the need to make students problem solvers.
The conference which was on the theme “I carry the solution: I reduce single-use plastic”, sought to encourage students to apply the knowledge acquired in the classrooms during their one year MSc Program.
Within the period, students are deployed to various communities across the country to identify problems there, raise the needed resources and solve those problems.
The students are then given the opportunity to present their output at the Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy Conference.
The students during the 2019 conference made presentations on the outputs, based on the problems they identified within their communities and how they were able to solve them.
Speaking to journalists, Course facilitator for the program, Victoria Mensah Nyamadi indicated that although the course is graded, the students take it upon themselves to ensure their projects are sustainable.
“So the projects don’t just end after the course has been graded at the conference. The students do follow-ups, where they have to hand it over to the next batch of students because they could not complete they do that”, she explained
She said the focus of the program is to ensure the communities get the needed impact of whatever projects the students have undertaken.
Director of Institute of Distance Learning at KNUST, Professor Kwame Osei Boateng commended the 2019 group for choosing to reduce plastic pollution in the communities they visited.
This he added has a great contribution to the global fight of climate change and its attendant adverse effects.
Professor Osei Boateng challenged the students to let their projects be the foundation on which they can attain greater heights in life rather than just concentrating on the certificate.
Head of Department of Development at the Institute of Distance Learning at KNUST, Dr Henry Mensah indicated that programme is also aimed at reducing the usage of plastic in order to protect the environment.
