The National Development Planning Commission says it is critical for the government to commit to implementing a reliable housing policy that would benefit all Ghanaians.
According to them, the COVID-19 pandemic among other things exposed the poor living conditions of Ghana’s poor people and how that makes them susceptible to diseases.
Speaking at an event in Accra on Friday, the Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission, Mohammed Alhassan said it is imperative for the government to fix the housing deficit.
In his view, poor housing had a negative effect on the management of the pandemic.
“Why a lot of people abused the lockdown was a result of access to water and access to sanitation,” Mr. Alhassan said.
“We can have a situation in the country where there are lots of people staying outside in the streets and even in slums.”
“Therefore there is the need for us to come out with housing policy so we can provide and respond to the housing needs of the country which were exposed so much during COVID,” he stressed further.
