The Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly has begun the construction of a 50-meter length bridge on the Densu River to link old Weija to New Weija.
In times past, residents and school children at Old Weija struggled to cross to New Weija when the dam is spilled with some even resorting to the use of canoes to cross to the other end.
The construction of the bridge according to the assembly will ease the traffic situation on the Mallam junction to Weija junction road.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Weija Gbawe, Patrick Kumor is optimistic the project will be completed in six months.
“I believe getting this project completed will also open the economic activity within this enclave. On my right side is where we have the Weija spillway, and you can just imagine, any time it’s being spilled and your daughter or son will have to use a canoe to cross. This is Greater Accra, we cannot afford to put our kids in danger. We are very happy the government has listened to our plights, and today we are having this bridge is constructed.”
“The duration is just six months, and after the six months, all the other linked roads that are supposed to be done will also be linked to it so that we can open up this enclave so that the two communities, i.e the Old Weija and the New Weija can now be put together by the construction of this bridge. It is going to be a 50-meter length bridge which will carry two vehicles on each side, so I believe its something that we are very much appreciative of this government and the Member of Parliament supporting and contributing to getting this done.”
He also stated that the community members are happy about the latest development.
“As I keep saying, development is a process, not an event. We started pushing for this in 2018 and today we are having the green light to get this bridge constructed. And I believe the community around here is very much happy because for the first time they can drive over the bridge to the other community and to other areas in the municipality.”
