Youth within the Ejisu Constituency in the Ashanti Region have been enrolled in an Aquaculture initiative following the construction of fishponds in the area.
The initiative, which is being spearheaded by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu, John Ampontuah Kumah, is part of efforts to provide jobs for the teeming youth and graduates in the constituency.
The four fish ponds will be managed by 100 youth within the constituency.
The project, which is being funded by the Ejisu MP, is expected to produce 50,000 catfish in its first phase.
The MP is rolling out other initiatives, including the Ejisu Club 100, to provide jobs for graduates within the constituency as a measure to reduce unemployment.
He believes that such initiatives will help empower the youth.
“I want to encourage young people in the constituency to believe that they can be the change that they sought. We want to give them opportunities. This is part of the CLUB 100 agenda that I have put across. All the CLUB 100 members should have a minimum turnover of Ghc 1,000,000 per year, so these are businesses that we are deliberately supporting and growing so that in a very short time we can have formidable entrepreneurs within the Ejisu Constituency”, he explained.
Mr. Kumah further urged the youth to take full advantage of these initiatives.
He indicated that similar fish ponds will be replicated in other areas within the constituency to ensure that majority of the youth benefit from opportunities in the Aquaculture sector.
The beneficiaries with Agricultural backgrounds are expected to manage the fish ponds and increase the production of the fish for the market.
Some of them welcomed the initiative and pledged to put in their best.
The project is in partnership with So Good Fish Farm, Ministry for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Planting for Food and Jobs, and the Center for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
