A Ghanaian Wikipedian, Stella Agbley has called on Ghanaians to bridge the African literature gap on Wikipedia through active volunteering.
Leading the Wiki Hour Initiative 2021 on the theme “A Right to a Healthy Environment”, Miss Agbley explained that the information gap on Africa affects the quality of knowledge representing the continent.
Wikipedia, which is an online encyclopedia edited by volunteers, offers free information on various topics and personalities, however, there has been a wide gap in African literature.
She added that participants drawn from both virtual and in-person consistently participated in all the training set in the quest to add their voice to preserve valuable content about Ghana onto Wikipedia.
The participants comprised environmental activists within several organizations, related to SDGs and fact-checking.
The Wiki Hour Initiative Ghana’s team in collaboration and support from the Wikimedia Foundation led the 2021 Wiki for Human Rights Campaign in Ghana.
This further saw a collaboration with Global Platform Ghana, to include its members and other youth bodies passionate about human rights, to help bridge this gap.
The team of Wikipedians organized and trained over 30 participants both in person and virtually on Wiki Data and Wikimedia projects on topics such as human rights, environment, and diverse communities over two weekends and topped it up with a writing contest for 14 days.
The Wiki Hour Initiative lead, Joy Agyepong expressed her delight in seeing huge contributions during the 14-day writing contest as Wikipedians in Lebanon and Nigeria supported the campaign by creating articles during the contest.
This year saw over 300 articles created and improved together with 676 audiovisuals and images of human rights institutions, advocates and climate groups uploaded on Wikimedia Commons by 25 editors on Wikipedia and its sister projects such as WikiData, Hausa language amongst others. The initiative had 3 users: Godwin Annoh, DaSupremo and AMY157 (Mary) emerging as top 3 winners and were crowned with Hard drives, pen drives and gifts for their invaluable input.
An introduction to the new award scheme called the “most promising award” went to user “thatroundgirl” for her high level of interest and contribution during the entire campaign.
