Cape Coast, Dec 14, GNA - Mr Joel Eshun, the Presiding Member (PM) of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, has called for the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to resource their client services units to deepen the engagement with the people.
The assemblies needed to be responsive and to create effective communication channels to receive complaints and petitions from the public to give the people the confidence to deal with them.
“Such seamless communication channels are potential instruments for winning the citizenry over and change the negative perceptions on social accountability and transparency," he added.
Mr Eshun was speaking at a town hall meeting jointly organised by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cape Coast and the Metropolitan Assembly.
It provided a platform for the residents to interact with officials of the assembly, to get adequately informed about activities and programmes of the assembly.
The Presiding Member noted that the assemblies were doing a good job but had not been doing enough to tell their success story.
He said the good works by the assemblies were lost on the people because of lack of effective communication and engagement.
He therefore asked that they routinely engaged with thir constituents.
They should be mindful of their responsibilities to the people – the reason for their existence which was to transform the lives of the people by providing them with basic social amenities.
Mr. Eshun urged them to focus on education, health, sanitation, economic empowerment, peace and security.
He encouraged all to pay their taxes to the assemblies and said their ability to bring development was dependent on the strength of their finances.
Mr Daniel Wallace Akyeampong, Metropolitan Director of Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, complained about what he said was the high number of teenage mothers in the region.
Although the figure of teenage pregnancies was down to 11,619 from the 2015 total of 13,014, this was unacceptable for a small area like the Central Region.
He therefore called for all to combine their efforts to reverse the trend and to provide more protection for the girl-child.
