Sunyani, Jan. 18, GNA – Government has released funds for work to resume on the abandoned Brong-Ahafo Regional headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Work on the two-storey building, situated at the Sunyani Central Garage, started in 1996 but was abandoned due to lack of funds.
But speaking to journalists during a visit to the project site in Sunyani on Wednesday, the Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) Samuel Nana Brenya, the Director of Logistics at the GNFS headquarters in Accra, said the project would resume on Monday December 21.
He could not immediately give estimates but added that the government has allocated adequate funds to complete the project by December this year.
DCFO Nana Brenya said the project is very important to the government and warned the contractor against delays and shoddy works.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) James Owusu Agyei, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of the GNFS, commended government for the funds and cautioned occupants and squatters to vacate the site for work to begin.
Mr Samuel Ofori, the Managing Director of the Samotrust Company Limited, the construction firm, said they were ready to ensure that quality work was done.
Meanwhile artisanal workers and mechanics around the project site, have appealed to the GNFS to give them time to relocate before construction begins.
They said the project would indeed affect their business activities, hence the need for them to have ample time to relocate.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency the mechanics appealed to the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to come to their aid and develop new site for them to relocate.
