Accra Feb. 17, GNA - Mr Alfred Asiedu Adjei, Presiding Member (PM) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has expressed satisfaction with the various interactions and community engagement held with traders and drivers at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange area.
About ten traders’ associations and drivers of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) operating at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, near Odawnaa, presented reports on the sanitation and security situation at the meeting which was attended by officials of the Okaikwei Sub-Metropolitan Assembly of the AMA.
The engagement was an interactive forum created by the PM, who is also the Assemblyman for the Avenor Electoral Area, to develop and strengthen opportunities for the traders and drivers, share best practices and seek clarification on pertinent issues raised by them.
Robberies, sanitation, lack of security and engagement of unauthorized electricians emerged as the top concerns raised by the participants.
Mr Alfred Adjei, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said beside the general issues of concern to the participants, the forum also helped to bring to the fore certain critical problems, such as robberies which require the attention of the police.
He said he would employ the use of the GPRTU task force to sack all squatters away from the station who were not potential travelers to minimize the rise in stealing incidents in the area.
Mr Adjei called on the traders and drivers to report all persons with suspicious characters to the Police and urged the GPRTU to continue educating the passengers on all relevant issues occurring in their daily activities.
He expressed satisfaction with the cooperation and participation of both the drivers and the traders and urged them to promote environmental health for the people living within the area/
Mr Ibrahim Ankrah, Okaikwei Sub-Metropolitan Assembly Chairman of the AMA, reminded the traders and drivers that the vision of President Akuffo Addo is to make Accra the cleanest city and this must reflect in their daily activities.
He urged them to stop dumping refuse into the drains as it can cause a disaster when it rains.
Mr Ankrah promised to engage the Community Police personnel to ensure adequate security is maintained at the station.
Mr Joseph Asitanga, Environmental Health Officer of the assembly, said health officers would go round to collate data on all food vendors for the issuance of a health certificates to them.
Mr Samuel Aryee Okine, Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), urged the traders not to engage unqualified electricians to work for them since a number of market fires could be attributed to poor electrical work.
