Accra, Nov. 7, GNA - Ibrahim Tanko, the Head Coach of Ghana’s U-23 national team, has said, he is confident his charges will book a ticket to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The Black Meteors of Ghana are in Egypt fine-tuning preparations towards the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tourney, which serves as qualifiers to the biggest multi-sport competition and he was sure of qualification.
The team held their first training session yesterday and the coach was impressed by the players output saying “so far, training is very good. We have all the players now in camp and when I saw the players train this evening, I was impressed and I hope that we would continue with this attitude so that Friday we would have a very good game. Most of my players are used to the weather condition here, so we are fine”.
Ghana would open her Olympic campaign against Cameroon on Friday in Cairo and Tanko said, he is wary of the threat his opponent pose.
“As a coach, you need to know your opponent and I don’t think they are going to have an advantage over us. We are all playing in the same stadium at the same time and my boys are ready. The players want to make history and I also want to qualify to the Olympics. We’re motivated and we will get there.”
The Black Meteors would be chasing an Olympic slot which eluded the country for the past 15 years when Ghana competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Coach Tanko called for Ghanaians support to rally behind the team to achieve their target.
Ghana is paired with hosts Egypt, Cameroon, and Mali in Group A.
