Tempane (UE) Nov. 7, GNA - The Tempane District Assembly is supporting over 277 People Living with Disabilities (PWD’s) in the area, with livestock and other livelihood empowerment opportunities to help them earn income to support themselves and their families.
The Assembly provided goats, sheep, fertilizer and cash, all worth GH¢237,809 Ghana to the PWDs to enable them to start or expand their businesses while those who had the animals were expected to rear them.
This was made known at a ‘Meet the Press Series’ of the Tempane District Assembly at Tempane, to showcase the Assembly’s effort in improving the livelihood conditions of the people, especially the most vulnerable in the area.
Mr Paul Azumah Abugri, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Assembly in a presentation said 328 animals were purchased for 82 PWDs, 672 bags of fertilizer for 53 farmers, while cash was given to students to support them in school and cheques worth GHC 114,469 were presented to some PWDs interested in livelihood empowerment business ventures such as petty trading among others.
Mr Abugri said government was focused on reorganising and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities by implementing the disability Act 715, 2006 to fully integrate the PWDs into the mainstream socio-economic life of the society.
He said the assembly had undertaken various development projects including; the construction of education facilities such as classroom blocks and students’ accommodation at the senior high and basic schools, to promote quality teaching and learning in the district.
The Assembly also provided a number of health facilities including; Community Based Health Services (CHPS) compounds to get health service delivery closer to the people in the area.
Mr Abugri said many people were encouraged by the government’s flagship programmes such as the planting for food and jobs and subsidised farming inputs such as fertilizer and seedlings of cash crops, to go into farming.
He charged the people to support government in the delivery of its policies since they were geared at improving their living conditions and creating a development oriented society.
Mr Musah Alale Banaga, a visually impaired man and Zanyeya Adams, a 20 year- old physically challenged person from the Tubong community who spoke to the GNA, could not hide their joy over the initiative and said “this is a life time dream come true, which will help us generate income to support our families and undertake other social projects”.
