Accra, Nov. 7, GNA - MTN Ghana Foundation has handed over a 20-unit dormitory to the Women Action Group (WAG) Vocational Training Centre at Pantang, in the Greater Accra Region, to aid their services for women empowerment.
The Foundation also furnished the facility with double beds and lockers, in addition to a washroom.
The project would help alleviate the plight of some of the women who travel long distances to the centre to learn a trade and provide also comfort for those who had to pass the night.
Mr Samuel Koranteng, the Corporate Services Executive, MTN Ghana, who cut the tape to open the facility, lauded the volunteerism and selfless support offered by staff of MTN to ensure the speedy completion of the dormitory.
The employees raised the funds for the project during the MTN 21 Days Yellow Care in June last year. They also painted the edifice.
The project formed part of the MTN’s mandate of empowering the youth, especially women, to make a living by taking their destinies in their own hands.
“The 20-unit dormitory is a way of providing a brighter future for the youth by way of fending for themselves and their families through the acquisition of skills in the digital world.”
The company has also provided the women with digital marketing skills, which would facilitate their trade.
Mrs Felicia Adade, the Founder and Proprietor of the Centre, expressed her appreciation to MTN Ghana Foundation for the support, saying, “MTN’s assistance is a miracle to us. We hope they would come again to assist us more in other areas.”
Mrs Adade explained that the Centre had difficulty in providing accommodation for some of the women who travelled long distances to the Centre to learn beading and bread making, dressmaking, catering, hair styling, among others.
Some of them commuted daily from Koforidua, Abokobi, Oyarifa, Adentan, and Haatso and faced challenges footing their fares.
The WAG Vocational Training Centre over the years has empowered than 800 women.
MTN Ghana Foundation was established in 2007 as a single-purpose vehicle to drive all MTN Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives in the country.
