Wa, (UW/R), Nov. 26, GNA – Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, has appealed to medical doctors and other critical staff to accept posting to the region.
He said some doctors, nurses and other staff refused postings to the Upper West Region with the perception that it was a deprived region without good schools for quality education for wards to attend which was negatively affecting the development of the region.
“Upper West Region is developed, there are good schools for children of workers coming to the region”, he said when Mr Alexander K. Abban, the Deputy Minister of Health, called on him in Wa.
The Deputy Minister was in the region to induct newly trained nurses and midwives in the Upper West Region into the nursing profession to enable them practice as fully fledged nurses and midwives.
Dr Bin Salih explained that currently there were only 60 medical Doctors in the region with only two doctors at the regional hospital, which he said impeded quality health service delivery.
The Regional Minister therefore implored the Deputy Health Minister to use his influence to post more doctors to the region to beef up the personnel.
Touching on the newly commissioned ultra-modern Regional Hospital, Dr Bin Salih stated that staff posted to the facility were being trained to enable them man the state of the art equipment installed at the facility, and expressed hope that the facility would be operational in December 2019.
On his part, Mr Abban said “the time has come for us to make a clarion call to all doctors that no part of Ghana is too deprived”, but added that he would work to institute a motivation package for doctors who accept postings to the perceived deprived regions to serve.
He said they would put in stringent efforts to ensure equity in the distribution of medical doctors across the country.
Mr Abban could not fathom why doctors who were from “villages” would be educated using the tax payer’s monies but would not be willing to go back to those “Villages” to serve the tax payers whose monies they benefited from.
