Accra, Nov. 29, GNA – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the Bloomberg Philanthropies have presented road safety equipment to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
The six speed detection equipment, which cost US$110,000, was to help reduce road fatalities and injuries to complement the efforts of the AMA at protecting lives of the citizenry.
Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, who made the presentation, said road traffic data collated by the National Road Safety Authority and the MTTD identified Accra as one of the cities with highest road deaths in 2018.
He said it was welcoming when the Bloomberg Road Safety Initiative launched a competition and Accra was selected among nine cities in the world to have good road safety laws and regulations but enforcement had been a challenge.
“WE can prevent road deaths through stronger laws and effective enforcement with modern equipment,” he said, and called on the MTTD personnel to help combat drink driving, speeding, and encouraging the use of motorcycle helmets and seatbelts.
He affirmed the AMA’s commitment to the safety of the city dwellers and urged stakeholders and the citizenry to collaborate with the Assembly to minimise the carnage on the roads.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anderson Fosu Arkaah, the Accra MTTD Commander, expressed the hope that through the collaborative efforts of social partners, the road fatalities and injuries would be minimised.
He gave the assurance that the MTTD would use the equipment judiciously to complement the drive by the AMA to reduce road accidents in Accra.
