Atwedie (Ash), Dec. 10, GNA – Years of open defecation at Atwedie in the Asante-Akim South Municipality is expected to come to an end following the commissioning of a modern toilet facility.
The community which is just about three kilometers from Juaso, the municipal capital has been grappling with sanitation issues due to lack of place of convenience, compelling residents to defecate in bushes and other open places over the years.
The situation was so bad that even classrooms as well as the Water and Sanitation Board premises in the community were not spared of the unacceptable practice.
Some residents preferred to ease themselves in those unauthorized places rather than the existing toilet which was in a bad condition with its roof virtually ripped off.
The new facility, which was constructed by one Michael Obeng, a native of the community based in the United Kingdom (UK), is expected to address the problem.
Members of the community who witnessed the commissioning of the 20-seater facility with an overhead water tank could not hide their excitement over the intervention.
They praised Mr Obeng for singlehandedly funding the project which would impact thousands of people.
They pledged to patronize the facility and help to arrest anyone caught engaging in open defecation since there was no more any excuse.
Mr Obeng said his decision to build the facility was influenced by a video he saw on YouTube about the open defecation due to lack of toilet in the community, while he was in the UK.
He said he was embarrassed as a native of the community and saw the need to provide the people with a standard toilet to end the practice.
