Obenemase (Ash), Dec. 10, GNA – It was one of the rarest moments in the history of Farmers’ Day Celebration in the Asante-Akim Central Municipality when an 18 year-old man was called to receive an award as the Municipal Best Youth Farmer for 2019.
Mr Gideon Kwasi Gyimah drew a thunderous applause from the huge gathering as he walked to pick his prize which is often given to people who are far above his age over the years.
Mrs Susan Akomeah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who could not help but appreciate the efforts of the diligent farmer, gave him a warm handshake and an unspecified amount of money as motivation.
Even prior to the presentation of his prize, most people who spotted him sitting in the midst of other award winners openly showed admiration for his achievement.
Mr Gyimah, who is into rabbit rearing, has also cultivated four acres of cassava, four acres of maize and one acre of beans.
At the tender age of 11, he quitted school when he was in class five to go into full time farming against the wishes of his parents who wanted him to continue his education.
Mr Gyimah told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that he does not regret quitting school to pursue his passion for farming, insisting that he made the right choice.
He said he did not leave school because he was academically weak, saying that, he was literate and was responsible for recording all his finances without any help.
“I work closely with the Agric Extension Officers and also ensure that I attend a lot of trainings and seminars on farming to update my knowledge on modern farming methods”, Mr Gyimah said.
He hopes to become great farmer in the near future to be able to support his family, especially the education of his siblings.
The MCE applauded him for showing the way for other youth to go into agriculture as a business and sustainable employment.
She urged Mr Gyimah to combine education with his farming business and implored him to be focused and strive for more success in food production for the country.
