Takoradi Dec. 17, GNA - The District Assembly and Unit Committee Elections took off smoothly at all polling stations in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis on Tuesday morning.
At almost all the voting stations, the exercise began at 0700 hours, although there were no long queues, there were indications that the process was progressing steadily.
The Presiding Officers the Ghana News Agency spoke to at the polling stations were of the view that though slow at the start, turn out would pick up later in the day since many people were buying time.
At the PWD polling station, 7 out of 427 registered voters cast their ballots as at 0750 hours, while 13 out of 689 registered voters cast their ballots at the RC school polling station at about 0757 hours.
At the All Saints Anglican School "A"polling station, 9 out of 574 registered voters cast their ballots as of 0805 hours, while At the All Saints Anglican School polling station, 20 people voted out of a total of 534, registered voters at 0810hours.
At the Presbyterian Primary polling station "A" 21 out of 825 registered voters cast their ballot at 0815 hours, with 17 out of 524 registered persons voting at the Presbyterian primary polling station B station at about 0820 hours. Only one person out of 343 registered voters voted at the Presbyterian JHS polling station as of 0825 hours.
At the Bethel Methodist school polling station, 11 people had voted as of 0830 hours, while 10 people had cast their ballots at the STCC primary school polling station at 0840 hours
The Methodist primary school "A"polling station in old Poase Upper New Takoradi,19 out 766 registered persons cast their ballots as of 0900 hours, while at the Methodist Primary "B" polling station in the same vicinity 11 out of 520 had voted.
Lower New Takoradi Akroboam polling station "A" 40 out of 548 had cast their bollots as of 0915 hours, while lower New Takoradi Akroboam Polling station "B" had 14 out of 363 voting at the sametime.
At all the polling centres visited, the atmosphere was generally calm with security personnel present and candidates’ representatives and voting went on smoothly.
There were no queues at all the stations visited with no complaints about shortage of voting material either.
Mrs Angelina Tagoe, Regional Director of the Electoral Commission indicated that the exercise took off in earnest at all the polling stations in the region.
She said 1,256 candidates had registered with the commission to be voted for, while 2777 candidates were contesting in the Unit Committee polls.
