Accra, Dec. 18, GNA - The Sports and Cultural Academy for Street Children has called on government to place more emphasis on the academic activities and development of street children in the country.
Mr Ataa Lartey, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sports and Cultural Academy for Street Children, said the children when given the necessary assistance could bring about development to many communities.
He said this at a party held over the weekend for students of the Academy.
Mr Lartey said the Academy is an institution that takes care of needy children in the society and provides them with education.
He called on civil society and other stakeholders to intensify their efforts in the fight against the problem street children and proffer actionable ways to reduce and eliminate it.
Mr Lartey said many people do not want to associate themselves with children from the streets and neither are they willing to support street children.
Madam Emelia Holm, a nurse and guest to the event, said there is the need for government to assist street children in developing their talent.
She said these children could also help build country into a prosperous nation.
Madam Holm said there is the need for government to develop career centres where the children could go and seek guidance about their future careers.
She said such an initiative by the government could help the children go far in their academic and vocational endeavours.
The Street Academy was founded in November of 1986 with the aim of using Education, Culture, and Sports to expose the hidden talents of children living on the streets.
The Academy runs a 100 per cent free non-formal school for street children who have had little or no schooling.
