Tema (GAR), Dec. 27, GNA - MTN Ghana has distributed over 250 hampers to babies born during the Christmas season, specifically from 24th to 26th December to enable the mothers to offer them quality childcare.
The hampers contained items including; diapers, baby skin and hair care products, dresses and footwear.
In the Greater Accra Region, the Tema General Hospital and Ashaiman Polyclinic benefitted from the gesture.
Madam Janet Quarshie, the Senior Manager for Branch Network Services, MTN Ghana, said the gesture was to show love to mothers who were favoured to deliver on the Christmas season.
She believed it would put a smile on their faces, especially those who could not afford to purchase all of such items for their babies.
It was also a way to show appreciation to the public, especially their customers for their contribution to the progress of MTN Ghana.
MTN embarked on this exercise from 2011, she said, and gave an assurance that it would be repeated every year for Ghanaians to know that MTN really cared for them.
“We will offer customers services that will make their lives better and easier in 2020,” she said.
Madam Eunice Amlanu, a Senior Midwifery Officer at the Ashaiman Polyclinic, thanked MTN for the support.
She, however, appealed for the company to help to renovate or construct an ultramodern maternity unit for the hospital as it was not spacious enough to house all expectant and delivered mothers.
In 2018, the Ashaiman Polyclinic recorded 3,558 deliveries, 3,284 deliveries from January to November 2019 and over 200 in December 2019, she said.
“However, the delivery room is not spacious and sometimes expectant mothers have to sit down on chairs even while having contractions, which doesn’t put them in the right condition,” she said.
The Polyclinic recorded seven deliveries on December 25, five girls and two boys, she said.
Mrs Evelyn Sarkpor, a Senior Midwifery Officer In Charge of the Post Caesarian Session Ward, Tema General Hospital, said MTN after sponsoring their ultramodern Maternity Unit, also visited them periodically to offer them support.
Since the establishment of the new Maternity Unit, she said problems associated with space and inadequate beds were solved.
The General Hospital carried out seven Caesarian Sessions and eight normal deliveries on December 25, she disclosed.
Ms Sherifa Adams, a 19-year old mother and a beneficiary of the MTN support, who gave birth to twins expressed her excitement and gratitude towards the kind gesture from MTN.
Though she was happy to deliver twins, her excitement was incomplete as the father of her children refused to take responsibility by taking to his heels when she announced the news of her conception.
“I don’t even know where my children’s father is now. One of my problems now is how to cater for my children, so this hamper will go a long way to help in taking care of my children,” she added.
