Lopez, who will be challenging the IBF champion Commey, explained that the December 14 bout would be the Ghanaian fighter’s toughest bout in his eight-year professional career.
The American boxer is expected to lock horns with the Ghanaian in a co-feature of Terence Crawford – Egidijus Kavaliauskas main event at the Madison Square Garden.
In an interview with AB Boxing News, Lopez described Commey as an experienced fighter who has faced the likes of Robert Easter Jnr and Raymundo Beltran in the past but promised to dethrone him on the night.
“I have worked so hard for 17 years to finally get the opportunity. I want to thank Richard Commey for giving me this opportunity. He didn’t give it to me. We earned the spot by becoming mandatory for the IBF title. He’s the guy that has it, and he’s defending his title.
“I’m pretty sure he’s putting in a lot of work, especially for a fighter like me. It’s going to be a great night of boxing. Does he have the experience with the caliber of fighters he has faced? Yes. He is been there with Robert Easter, and has been there with Ray Beltran. The thing is, he has never faced a fighter like me,” said Lopez.
Commey has been in training camp preparing to make his second title defence after demolishing Raymundo Beltran in seven rounds last June to make a successful maiden defence.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian will be making his fourth world championship fight against the American having lost to Robert Easter Jnr in September 2016 before destroying Isa Chaniev last February to win the then vacant IBF strap in Texas. Read Full Story
