The Volta Region is set to disinfect 75 major markets and lorry parks on Saturday, the 4th April 2020 as part of presidential directives to control the deadly Coronavirus (COVID-19), therefore, economic activities in these markets would seize on the day, as the people have been asked to cooperate with the Regional Coordinating Council during these difficult times.
The Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, who made this known to the media at a press conference in the capital, Ho, directed all municipal and district chief executives to, as a matter of importance, engage all stakeholders in the fumigation exercise in their respective areas to enable them appreciate the relevance of the exercise and support it.
Dr. Letsa pointed out that the disinfection exercise, which would start from 5am on Saturday to 2pm, would be carried out simultaneously across the region at the markets and lorry parks, which would involve the various security agencies such as personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, police and the military among others.
The Regional Minister, a medical doctor by profession, assured the people that the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) was on top of the issue, and so far, nobody in the region had been infected, and advised that all shops in the markets be closed on Saturday for a smooth exercise, saying President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was tactically handling the situation, therefore was not much concern about the amount of money being used to control the spread of the disease.
“The President is on top of the issue and is not much worried about the amount of money being spent on the control measures put in place to save the lives of Ghanaians. As a nation, the President is prepared to do everything possible to protect Ghanaians against contracting this deadly disease called Coronavirus.”
Dr. Letsa commended the media for the professional manner in which they were going about their duties, particularly during these difficult times, saying the media has, over the years, contributed much to the development of the region and urged the personnel not to relent in their efforts at educating the people on the Coronavirus.
The Deputy Director of Public Health in the Volta Region, Dr. Senanu Dzokoto, said health personnel have been on high alert since the first case was reported in the country, and up to date, the Volta Region has had seventeen suspected cases, but all proved negative.
Dr. Dzokoto stressed the need for the people to adhere to the precautionary measures put in place, by washing their hands more frequently with soap, as well as use sanitisers, adding that the golden rule of ensuring social distance should be observed, which he stressed was key in controlling the spread of the disease.
