The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has noted that though President Akufo-Addo has directed that Ghanaians should not pay water bills for the next three months, it does not mean the usage of the precious commodity should be abused. To her, water must judiciously be used during the period in order not to overburden the Ghana Water Company.
Abena Dapaah has also asked Ghanaians to report all leakages to nearby Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) offices, adding that those who owe GWCL are equally part of those who are to enjoy the free water supply for April, May and June.
According to her, government has taken the plight of Ghanaians into consideration and thereby giving them free water, a directive she said, affects all regions in Ghana and not only lockdown areas.
Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, the Minister also pleaded with owners of standpipes to stop charging people who come for water from their end.
The Minister, Abena Dapaah indicated that GWCL will be sending bills via SMS to alert consumers about the amount of water a household has used in a month, with a notice that government will pay for the said bill.
