Boris Johnson remains in intensive care but is “responding to treatment” in hospital, Downing Street has said, after the prime minister received oxygen support for coronavirus complications.
Junior health minister Edward Argar has said the PM is “comfortable, he’s stable, he’s in good spirits” and denied there was a “power vacuum” at the top of government while Mr Johnson is absent. The prime minister’ acting deputy Dominic Raab chaired the coronavirus “war cabinet” this morning.
It comes as a new projection by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) indicates Britain is on course for the highest number of coronavirus deaths in Europe. The US body predicts 66,000 deaths from Covid-19 in the UK by August.
