The Kumasi Central Market has resumed operations today, Thursday April 9, 2020 after it was closed down last Tuesday over non-observance of social distancing protocols at the market.
It has been re-opened following a meeting with the Eleven Member Committee of the Kumasi Central Market and leadership of the 67 trade associations of the market by the Kumasi Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC).
The leadership of the traders will have to reorganise the traders into groups to operate a shift system. The over 5,625 food sellers would be divided into three, each of which would be identified by red, yellow and green Identity Cards for the purpose of the shift system.
A statement issued by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to that effect, signed by the Public Relations Officer, Ms. Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye said only 1,942 members of the trade associations dealing in assorted commodities would be allowed to trade on each day.
According to the PRO, following the agreement, the market was opened to the traders on Wednesday April 8, 2020 to formalise all arrangements regarding the shift and rotation system before it was opened to all the traders today. The KMA extended its appreciation to the leadership of the trade associations for their co-operation in arriving at a mutual agreement to make the market functional again after the two-day closure.
