Tragedy struck Tema New Town this morning when the rifle of a naval rating discharged a pellet which grazed the leg of a policewoman.
Information gathered by The Chronicle has it that the armed naval rating was providing guard for the policewoman at a checkpoint near the old Tema New Town police station under Operation Covid-19.
The policewoman identified as Francisca Tengey was said to have bent checking occupants of vehicle when the seaman’s rifle fired and took off the flesh around her knee.
The paper gathered that the magazine of the rating’s rifle was in his pocket. The suspicion is that he might have corked the gun earlier and a bullet entered the chamber before he removed the magazine containing the rounds of ammunition.
Police Public Relations source who confirmed the incident stated that the injured policewoman who was rushed to the Tema General Hospital is responding to treatment.
The naval rating has since been given close arrest.
The Director of the Directorate of Public Relations (DPR) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Col Eric Aggrey Quarshie when contacted stated that the incident has been brought to his attention and that the military has launched full scale investigation to establish how it happened.
