A worker of Gold Fields Ghana Limited and his wife have both tested positive for the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The worker, believed to be 56 years of age, has no travel record and tested positive at the Tarkwa Mine, is reported to have infected his wife with the virus.
The two have been isolated, whilst the company and the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Health Directorate rapid response team begins an aggressive contact tracing among the workforce, and in the mine’s host communities.
In a statement released by Gold Fields confirming the positive COVID-19 case, the mining giant added that samples of work colleagues who have been identified through the on-going contact tracing exercise have been taken.
Following that, the employees were also undergoing self-isolation for 14 days.
The statement added: “We have also tracked the employee’s movement over the past few weeks, and together with the municipal team, are tracing other people with whom he may have come into contact with in the Tarkwa community.”
Meanwhile, the Western Region has recorded 23 new COVID-19 cases, with Sekondi Takoradi leading with 11 positive cases – Ahanta West 3, Tarkwa Nsuaem 2, Nzema East 4, and Mpohor, EKMA, Ellembelle each with single cases.
