Mr. Eugene Boakye Antwi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin Constituency and Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, last Monday commissioned a mechanised borehole with four large Polytanks for the Kumasi Metro Fire Station.
The project, funded through the MP’s share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) at a cost of GH¢86,000, has a storage capacity of 30,000 litres of water.
It is expected to serve as a water hydrant and enhance availability of water to the Ghana National Fire Service to fight fire outbreaks in Subin, and the Kumasi Metropolis in general.
The decision to provide the mechanised borehole was inspired chiefly by the rampant fire outbreaks in the face of lack of water for firefighting purposes, as fire hydrants in the central business district were not fully functional.
The destruction of a chain of stores by fire at PZ in the central business district of Adum, Kumasi, on December 30, 2018, and the experience of three fire outbreaks at the Asafo and Kumasi Central markets within a period of 72 hours recently, informed the MP to salvage the situation, hence his commitment to construct a mechanised borehole with enough water storage capacity at the Metro Fire Station to solve the problem of lack of water for firefighting.
Commissioning it last Monday, the MP hoped the construction of the mechanised borehole would improve the firefighting capacity within the central business district, and thus minimise the havoc caused by fire to individuals and businesses in the Subin and the Kumasi Metropolis as a whole.
