The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has inducted and sworn in unit committee members in the various Sub-Metro Councils in the Metropolis, under the strict enforcement of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) health protocols.
Their inauguration follows the elections in December last year, which had delayed because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing the inaugural ceremonies separately, the Mayor of Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi, congratulated the unit committee members on their election and reminded them of their four-year mandate to contribute to local level governance, in line with the provisions of the Local Governance Act 936 of 2016.
He said their functions include supervising the staff of the District Assembly on their assigned duties, assisting the Town, Urban and Town Councils to collect allocate and contract revenues, as well as mobilise members for the implementation of self-help and development projects, and monitor same.
They were also cautioned that “your actions must be within the confines of the laws as provided for in the various legal instruments,” adding that acting outside the law will have repercussions which they should all endeavor to avoid
The KMA Chief Executive said it was the duty of unit committee members to take lawful steps to abate any nuisance, provide focal point for discussion of local problems, and take remedial action or make recommendations to the Assembly, where necessary, through the relevant Urban, Zonal or Town Councils.
Osei Assibey Antwi also charged them to focus on improving sanitation in line with the Assembly’s resolution to ensure a healthy environment, under its “Keep Kumasi Clean and Green” project.
The Mayor said it was incumbent on unit committee members to help correct the ills in society by visiting homes and report landlords who do not keep to good environmental hygiene practices.
He charged them to play a lead role in the fight against filth by intensifying community sensitisation on the effect of actions that pollute the environment.
He said in this era of COVID-19 era, the Assembly expected the unit committee members to help educate the public on their rights, privileges, obligations and responsibilities, in consultation with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), as well as ensure the strict compliance of the presidential directives and World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols in containing the spread of the Coronavirus.
The Kumasi Mayor advised them to command respect by leading exemplary lives, and be role models to the communities they represent on the local level governance structure.
