President Akufo-Addo has highlighted the distinctions between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), saying the former builds the economy, but the latter always comes to shrink it.
According to the President, the NPP creates a properly regulated enabling atmosphere for businesses to flourish, but the NDC allows chancers and speculators to lure the citizens into putting their monies into doggy enterprises.
As a result, he said, the NPP owed it to Ghanaians to win the December 7 elections to continue with the good works for the next four years. He has, therefore, urged party supporters to go out and tell the people the achievements of the party, to show clearly, the difference between them in the way of tackling problems, vis-à-vis the way the opponent does it.
He said: “We grow the economy, they shrink the economy. We create a properly regulated enabling atmosphere for businesses to flourish, they allow chancers and speculators to lure citizens into putting their monies into doggy enterprises. They bring our banks and our financial services to near collapse, and we have to clean up thoroughly and restore confidence.”
He continued: “They (NDC) plunge us into dum-so; we keep the lights on. They look on clueless as hundreds of thousands of Ghana’s children exit school at JHS; we bring free SHS and free TVET to prepare our children better to face life. They resort to crude language when they are faced with difficult arguments; we raise the level of public discourse.
“We owe it to ourselves and to Ghana to win the elections in December decisively to make sure that we keep the economy on track, and not in the hands of people who will run it again into the ground,” he added.
Clad in a white sparkling, neatly sewn apparel with the logo of the NPP nicely embroidered on the left side of his chest, President Akufo-Addo gave the assurance that the upcoming presidential elections would the clearest of choices for Ghanaians to make, as it is between the current president and the president who was voted out in the last contest.
He observed that the elections would be about leadership, integrity, measuring records against promises and the performances of the two men, when given the opportunity by the Ghanaian people to lead.
President Akufo-Addo could not fathom why the party, which, he said, was responsible for the worst economic performance of the last three decades, is seeking a comeback.
“We are told that those who were responsible for the worst economic performance of the last 30 years say they have learned their lessons and seek another opportunity to correct their mistakes. Then I ask, should the Presidency be used for experiments? Surely not! You, the Ghanaian people, deserve better, and you will get better on 7 December,” President Akufo-Addo said.
Touching on the upcoming registration exercise, President Akufo-Addo said that the road “has now been cleared for the Electoral Commission to proceed [with the mass voter registration], I am calling on every member and sympathiser of the New Patriotic Party, and, indeed, on all eligible Ghanaians, no matter what party they belong to, if any, to go out and register, so they can exercise their civic responsibilities on December 2020 to elect a government of their choice in a free, fair, peace and transparent election.”
He was speaking at a National Executive Meeting last Saturday, which acclaimed him to lead the party as its flagbearer for the 2020 General Elections. After the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) overwhelmingly endorsed his candidature, President Akufo-Addo also announced he would maintain his vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as running mate for the election, a choice the NEC accepted as well. That would be the fourth time the duo is going into presidential elections.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said he was most honoured and privileged to have been chosen by the President to serve, once again, as his running mate.
He further acknowledged that his job as running mate is to support the President in implementing his vision, but swiftly opined that: “The best running mate in the world will not make a difference if the President is indecisive or incompetent.”
“I’m thankful that in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, I have [a] strong, decisive, incorruptible and competent President to work for,” Dr Bawumia stated.
“I wholeheartedly, and with humility, accept the nomination and am ready and prepared to serve.
“Sir, it has been a privilege and honour working for you, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity, God bless you,” Dr Bawumia added.
