A New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth leader has declared his intention to contest Mr. Benito Owusu Bio, Member of Parliament (MP) for Atwima Nwabiagya North Constituency, as an independent candidate in the December parliamentary polls.
Mr. Owusu Bio was maintained to contest the December polls on the ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the fifth consecutive time.
However, Mr. Emmanuel Osei Gyamfi, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and youth leader, has announced his intention to unseat the incumbent, and entreated the electorate to endorse his candidature in the upcoming December general elections.
The former parliamentary researcher and consultant in leadership noted at the launch of his bid over the weekend that the incumbent MP’s 16 years in Parliament has been a waste of time, since he has no idea about parliamentary procedures, and, therefore, knows nothing about politics.
The youth leader claimed the MP was not participating in any parliamentary proceedings, and wondered how he was going to lobby for development to positively impact the welfare of his constituents.
He alleged that the MP had been using his wealth to influence his re-election over the years, thus imposing himself on the constituency.
Osei Gyamfi said though he was not rich, he was ready, committed, and zealous to help transform the fortunes of the electorate.
According to him, his mission and vision is to help transform the constituency which is lagging behind in terms of infrastructural development, citing that the whole constituency cannot boast of a government health facility with hospital status. “No single road has been tarred; no single factory to absorb the teeming unemployed youth in the constituency,” he claimed, and questioned what the MP uses his share of the National Health Insurance Fund, the one million dollar per constituency, MPs scholarship, and the Common Fund for.
He said most of the health facilities like the Dabaa Health Center at former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s home town lacks oxygen, and that males and females use the same ward at most of the health centers, which also lack hospital beds.
The independent candidate emphatically stated that the MP resides outside the constituency, and, therefore, does not care about the plight of the ordinary voter, hence his commitment as a citizen of the area to contest as an independent candidate to champion the welfare and interest of the constituents.
The aspirant also complained that the security situation in the constituency is nothing good to write home about, coupled with the joblessness of the majority of the youth, as almost all the industries in the constituency had virtually collapsed over the last 16 years.
