The Volta Region Resource Group, a group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described recent claims by the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the ongoing voter registration exercise in the region had been characterised by harassment and intimidation as a deliberate act to discredit the Electoral Commission (EC).
The Secretary and Spokesperson of the Volta Region NPP Resource Group, Mr. King David Akpabli, addressing the media at Ho recently, said they had toured all the registration centres in the region without sighting any military officer, and that the atmosphere at the centres is that of peace, contrary to what the NDC wants the world to believe.
He called on the NDC to give praises where it is due and stop the tribal politics. To him, the EC in the Volta Region ought to be commended for the professional manner the registration exercise was being carried out.
“It is, therefore, obvious that the NDC was only crying wolf in their alarmist claims of a military invasion of the region, and made up stories of soldiers harassing people from exercising their right to register, a situation that, in actual fact, did not exist,” he stressed.
According to Mr. Akpabli, it was very reprehensible for the NDC to seek to create fear and panic in the region with the deliberate misrepresentations, saying the members of the main opposition party should bow their heads in shame.
Touching on bringing development to the Volta Region, he said it sounds so ridiculous for the NDC to blame the NPP for the underdevelopment of the area. He argued that the NDC has ruled the country for so many years, but they have always neglected the region that gives them votes.
To him, therefore, the poor road network in the Volta Region cannot be blamed on the NPP and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as the NDC currently wants the people to believe.
He reminded the NDC that the people of the Volta Region are serious, hardworking and discerning, and who would not be allowed to be deceived by the same NDC all the time, because politics is about bringing the needed development to the people.
Mr. Akpabli told the journalists that the government, led by a visionary leader, Nana Akufo-Addo, was going to reconstruct the Denu-Aflao, the eastern corridor, Juapong-Volo-Adidome roads among other strategic roads in the Volta Region to facilitate the socioeconomic activities of the people.
Apart from the road projects, Mr. Akpabli continued that the ongoing railway project, which would pass through the Volta Region to the northern part of the country, is aimed at promoting the rapid development of the region upon completion.
The Spokesperson for the NPP Volta Region Resource Group observed that it was highly surprising that the Volta Region that served as the World Bank of the NDC had never produced a vice presidential candidate after former President J. J Rawlings who comes from the region ended his term as a constitutionally-elected President. To him, the region has now become a voting machine for the party without compensating it with development projects.
