President Akufo-Addo has lauded the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama for her immense contribution towards the growth of the sector.
Nana Addo heaped praises on his minister when he performed the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Nsukwao Basin drainage in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, on Tuesday.
According to the president, the Minister is amongst the hard working Ministers who are performing extremely well and is of the view that the construction of the various drainage systems in the country proves the kind of work she is doing.
He disclosed that, out of the 16 regions, 14 of them will benefit from the program and that the other two regions will also benefit in the next phase of the project.
In the Eastern Region, he said four (4) Municipal assemblies -Lower Manya Krobo, Birem Central, Abuakwa South and New Juaben South are benefiting from the program.
“As the head of the New Patriotic Party government, we will continue to provide the needs of the people. The things that matter to the local people in the community are what the government is coming to resolve.
“I will urge the contractor to do well and work within the budget and on time to benefit the people” he said. The project, which cost GHC 15,811,134 is expected to be completed within six (6) months with an additional money of GHC 800,000 for design and supervision and Ghc 161,000 for effective monitoring.
Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfour commended the president for the good work he has done in the Eastern Region, precisely Koforidua.
He applauded the president by saying that he has taken into consideration the plight of the people of Koforidua and supported them immensely especially concerning the construction of the drains at Nsukwao.
“The president cares for our safety, that is why he has come back to finish his project in the region. We are aware of the great river in Nsukwao, we are surrounded by mountains and when it rains, it floods heavily, sometimes into the residents rooms”, he said.
The minister of Local Government and Rural Development,HajiaAlimaMahama said the government is only providing for its citizens through the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program.
According to her, the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program is to improve urban management and basic urban services in 25 participating municipal assemblies in 14 Regions.
The minister hinted that the construction is one of the key projects the New Juaben South municipality has identified following perennial flood that occurs in the area every year.
She said that the construction of the drainage is a great project that will help the residents of Nsukwao since the area has experienced great flooding since 2016.
“The Nsukwao dam is a key project that has caught our attention, the people of Nsukwao have suffered great flood and recorded the highest flood incidents’ ‘, she said.
According to her, the intervention is to deliver a strong drainage that would minimise flood in the area and other communities within the municipality.
The project is expected to be completed within 6 months and promised to ensure that it is delivered well in the Region.
